Welcome to the ultimate battle between the two communication software giants Skype versus Viber! Who will come out on top? Take a look at our detailed analysis of both Skype and Viber’s PC services and decide for yourself…

Skype vs Viber

Registration

Skype

To register on Skype is a bit of an awkward affair. To open a Skype account you must create a Microsoft account. If you didn’t already know Microsoft have combined MSN Messenger together with Skype in order to create the ultimate Microsoft messaging machine! Although this has its perks, all your MSN contacts are moulded together with your Skype contacts for example, when it comes to registration this is a bit of a nuisance.

Now in order to set up a Skype account you need to create a Microsoft account. If you have a Hotmail account simply log in with it and you can start creating your Skype profile immediately. However if you don’t have a Hotmail or Live webmail account you have to go through the whole long winded process of setting up this and then setting up a Skype account.

Viber

To become a fully-fledged ‘Viberer’ all you have to do is register your phone number and when you receive the text with the code just type it in and Viber will import your contacts from your phonebook. In this regard Viber stands heads and shoulders above Skype. You don’t have to go about scouring for details of your contacts via email, Facebook etc, you simply allow Viber to access your phone contacts.

Of course there are limitations, and if you don’t have a phone well then ok you can’t join Viber, but in this day and age it is pretty safe to assume that most of us out there do! It is understandable that some people are a bit suspect of having their phone number registered with Viber but if you want a free, quick way to contact your Viber mates I think that is a small price to pay!

Winner: Viber

Skype has been around for ten years (check out our celebration of its 10th birthday) so it makes a bit of an assumption that its users have been linked to it or MSN at some stage. Due to this Skype thinks that merging with MSN means a seamless registration for users when in fact it just severely lengthens the time for registration and makes it cumbersome for non-Microsoft account holders. Viber wins hands-down when it comes to registration, all you need is your phone beside you and you can register immediately and import all your contacts with minimum effort and stress!

Texts

Skype

Skype on your PC offers you a comfortable way to instant message. It is quick and for the Windows 8 user, you can place your Skype messenger neatly and orderly on whatever section of the screen that feels most comfortable. One thing that is notable about Skype’s messenger is that its style or format has not developed much over the years, so the interface can seem a little dull and outdated. However it does provide a range of emoticons that you can use to liven up your messenging!

Viber

When it comes to instant messaging it is hard to beat Viber. With Viber for the PC you can send texts to all of your Viber contacts on their PCs or mobile devices. To notify you of an incoming message the application gives an unobtrusive ding and you are presented with a fun and silly collection of emoticons and stickers to choose to accompany your texts if you wish! Its interface is sleek and modern and maybe it is the vibrant purple theme but Viber does seem to win in the style stakes!

Winner: Viber

Viber is more suitable for messaging than Skype. Its messenger’s interface is clean, innovative and easy to navigate. In fact it is similar to the text messaging screen on smartphones. Skype however presents a clunkier, more old fashioned messaging screen in the style of previous MSN messaging screens. It might be controversial to note but with Viber’s array of silly stickers and its sleek and modern interface it may be aimed towards a younger audience than Skype?

Viber

Calls

Skype

The quality of Skype’s call feature has improved greatly over the years. Where once the program was plagued with frequent cut outs it is worth noting that now Skype calls are a relatively pain free and a pleasurable experience! You can ring and chat to your friends with Skype for free and for as long as you like! When it comes to ringing non Skype folk the company presents you with the option of buying Skype credit. This works out a lot cheaper than using your normal phone service, especially for long distant calls.

Viber

Viber is clearly trying to improve and enhance the audio quality of its calling feature but at the moment it doesn’t present the excellent quality we have come to expect from online calling applications. Despite obtaining a high speed internet connection calls made on Viber for the PC have a tendency to crash and cut off unexpectedly. Very irritating! Of course another noteworthy comment about Viber’s calling service is that it charges the normal rate of your phone carrier for calls made to non Viber phones.

Winner: Skype

Skype is the blatant winner in this category. It has spent a lot of time honing the finer details of its call service, it now offers a speedy, strong and reliable phone call connection. When it comes to ringing non-Skypers the application also surpasses Viber as the credit option offers a financially viable option to anyone making long distant calls.

Video Calls

Skype

This latest version of Microsoft’s Skype now allows you to make video calls from your PC to Skype users with smartphones, tablets etc. Skype is renowned for its video calling feature. Nowadays business avail of the service to conduct interviews and conferences and media outlets even broadcast reports using Skype. Video calls do occasionally crash, the video image can become pixilated but overall it tends to be reliable and clear.

Viber

When it comes to video calls Viber is notably stilted. You can achieve video calls between Viber users on computers but the company has not yet optimized this across all of its platforms. This means that you can’t yet perform video calls from Viber for PC to smartphone Viber users.

Winner: Skype

Due to the increasing demand on Skype’s video calling service and the huge volume of users that Skype has there is constant pressure on the communication giant to update and improve the quality of its video calls. This has resulted in Skype working hard to enhance and ensure the strength of its video connection. Although there are still a few problems Skype does provide the best quality free video calling service in the world.

Skype

Overall Winner: Skype

Who ever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Skype may be a decade in existence, that’s like 1 million years in the tech world, but it has managed to improve and develop its communication tools to the highest possible standard. Viber is a newbie and although it does have an incredibly efficient texting service when it comes to calls and video calls it has a lot to learn. Viber offers a modern and innovative alternative to Skype, its phone registration feature is genius and it boasts a fantastic texting service, but Skype is the more advanced and developed communication tool. Skype has had a wealth of experience that has allowed it to develop and integrate its calling services across a range of its applications, because of this it trumps Viber.
